One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.

He said, “My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all.

One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: “Which wolf wins?”

The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”

TCM:1,000 years of history

Chinese medicine sometimes referred to as TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) or CCM (Classical Chinese Medicine) has a rich history dating back to thousands of years B.C. Based on the philosophies of the Tao and classical Chinese beliefs, these two variations of Chinese medicine differ from each other in that CCM strictly adheres to roots of the ancient Chinese medicine; and TCM is a more accepted form of alternative medicine that has become more “Westernized” in conjunction with modern terms.

Broadly taught throughout China, TCM is also offered through a number of Chinese medicine or acupuncture schools in North America as well. Teaching holistic principles that demonstrate how all things are connected (mind, spirit, and body); future Chinese medicine practitioners learn how to prescribe herbal prescriptions relative to the patient. The belief is to treat the “whole person,” not the disease.

Chinese medicine aims to balance the yin (water and earth) and yang (fire and air) of the body’s life force (Chi or Qi); and is a highly evolved medicine in that it approaches healthcare on the foundation of the meridian system (energy channels of the body). Unlike conventional medicine in the West, Chinese medicine places an emphasis on the body’s elements, and their interrelation with the body’s individual systems.

If you visit a Chinese medicine practitioner, you will discover an entirely different form of diagnostics. In addition to observing a patient’s face, these holistic health practitioners perform a pulse diagnosis (palpation of the radial artery pulse), body palpation, and other unique non-invasive diagnostic measures.

Once a Chinese medicine practitioner has formulated his observations, and has come to a conclusive treatment method, some of the many holistic medicines that he might offer include Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, holistic nutrition advice, moxibustion, cupping, Tuina (Chinese medical massage), Qigong, or Tai Chi, among others. Some specialized practitioners may administer auriculotherapy (ear acupuncture) as a health treatment.

What Causes the Toxic Build-up?

We put our colons under a great deal of stress with our modern lifestyle. Years of fast food, cigarettes, prescription drugs and alcohol keep the colon busy. Add to that indigestion, constipation, work-related stress, illnesses and sedentary lifestyles, and you have a recipe for an unhealthy colon.

Don’t underestimate how important a healthy colon is to your body - Colon cancer is second only to lung cancer among cancer deaths in the US. Waste and toxins can build up in your system, and even if you don’t feel constipated your colon may need your help!

Colon Cleansing uses herbs and natural supplements to help your body mend its internal organs and restore you to health. The crucial part of a colon cleanse is the addition of Psyllium to your diet.

Juice fasting is a great way to restore your system to health, cleanse the colon and lose weight at the same time. Often your body tells you it is hungry when you really just need to drink some water, so drink one of these juices every time you feel hungry. This way you’re staying healthy and not engaging in unnecessary binge eating.

Valentine’s Day Aphrodisiac: ginger cherry custard

February 8th, 2008 velvetfont Posted in Aphrodisiac, Body, Daily Tips, Emotions, Food as Medicine, General, Herbal Products, Integrative Medicine, Lifestyle, Mind, Recipes, Uncategorized, Weekly Features, culture, diet, healing, health No Comments »

The pairing of spicy ginger and sweet creamy custard is a marriage made in heaven. Top that with some rum and honey-poached dried cherries and the honeymoon may last indefinitely. Below is this surprisingly simple recipe for Ginger Custard with Poached Cherries.

SIMPLE SOLUTION: For centuries both ginger and cherries have been used as aphrodisiacs. Whether their efficacy in that mission is fact or fiction has yet to be proven conclusively by science, but it is known that ginger and cherries are loaded with health-giving properties. Ginger has been shown to improve circulation, among other things, while cherries are filled with antioxidants, melatonin, and important vitamins and minerals. This recipe is really quite simple, but does require time for chilling, so plan accordingly.

Poached Dried Cherries
1 cup dried cherries
1 tablespoon honey
1 tablespoon rum

Candied ginger for garnish (optional)

1. Cover the cherries with 2 cups of hot water and let soak for 15 minutes. Drain and reserve ¾ cup of the soaking water.

2. Combine the reserved soaking water, honey, rum and cherries in a saucepan and bring to a boil.

3. Reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes, or until the liquid is thickened and the cherries are tender. Allow to cool.

Ginger Custard
1/2 cup Sucanat (or the natural sweetener of your choice)
1/4 cup fresh ginger, finely chopped
1/4 cup water
1¾ cups whole organic milk
2 whole eggs
2 egg yolks
Pinch of salt

1. Preheat oven to 325°F with rack in middle level.

2. Boil Sucanat, ginger and water in a heavy saucepan, and stir until Sucanat is dissolved. Add milk, return just to a boil and remove from heat. Cover and let stand for 15 minutes.

3. Stir whole eggs, yolks, and salt in a bowl. Gently whisk in hot mixture and then strain to remove solids. Divide mix into six custard bowls, ramekins, or pretty teacups, and cover each one securely with foil.

4. Place custards in a large rectangular baking dish and place in oven. Fill the baking dish with hot water to reach halfway up the custard bowls.

5. Bake in the water bath for about 40 minutes, or until edges are firm but center still wobbles.

6. Remove carefully and place custards on a rack, and remove foil to cool to room temperature, about 40 minutes. Place custards in refrigerator and chill for 2 hours. Top with poached cherries and a scattering of chopped candied ginger.

Serves 6.

What Is Spiritual Health? ayahuasca consciousness

In today’s culture, the concept of Spirit has been scientifically removed from our belief system. Only through the study of other, much older cultures have we been reminded of what our ancestors knew to be the “truth”. Religion, cultural dis association from the natural world and modernization of societies has changed that belief system of “truth” to ritual of words with no meaning.

What our ancestors and these ancient cultures knew is that Spirit is real. This Spirit within each of us is capable of much more than we could ever imagine, and by encountering it through the use of Ayahuasca we are learning about our deeper selves. We can begin to expand the boundaries of our true potential, to gain the power to heal ourselves. An intimate connection is made with the Divine through this healing modality.

Many physical and emotional sicknesses are the result of a disharmony within ourselves. Something is wounded in within our soul, and it has manifested into a condition that shows up emotionally or as a physical ailement. By treating the body, the affliction can only be maintained, but not cured, like cutting a weed that grows back a short time later.

Consciously working with the Spirit, however, can allow an individual to discover the root of an illness and to pull up these roots and alleviate their own suffering. Spirit can manifest illness and it can manifest pure joy. The power lies in the belief of our intentions and our willingness to surrender to what we can never know, but can feel within our own beings.

Born Visionaries: prayer / poetry

December 28th, 2007 velvetfont Posted in Daily Tips, Emotions, General, Global Consciousness, Global News, Hot Show Topics, Lifestyle, Mind, Spirit, Spiritual Afterlife, Spiritual Health, Sustainable Resourse, Uncategorized, Weekly Features, Women, culture, earth, health No Comments »

True vision is a lot more than goal-setting or becoming more resourceful and innovative. Vision begins by gathering information through the senses about what currently is. To this is added the mind’s imagination of what can be and the heart’s wisdom about who we are and how we are called to dance with each other.

The wisdom of the heart is crucial to vision because our hearts are the source of our deepest values, passions, and connections to others. There’s no conflict in our hearts between ourselves and others. Instead, there’s the clarity, the humility and compassion we need to confront our dreams, needs and shortcomings while we deal effectively with the needs, dreams and shortcomings of others.

When we see clearly from our hearts, we discover our purpose and can envision many ways to fulfill it. We become more resourceful and creative, better able to inspire effective teamwork. We can see hope inside despair, direction in the midst of chaos, options inside challenges.

Becoming the visionaries we were born to be is not a problem that can be solved but a mystery that must be experienced. Like all mysteries, vision comes alive in ways that are unique to each person and situation. Thus, whenever we ask How can I [my company] become more visionary? the answer is more often found through prayer or poetry than textbooks or logical thinking.

While visionary development can never be reduced to recipes or rules, the following guidelines may be helpful, particularly if they are adapted freely.

The Power of Love and Forgivenss: a woman’s worth

December 24th, 2007 velvetfont Posted in Body, Death, Emotions, General, Global Consciousness, Lifestyle, Mind, Spirit, Spiritual Health, Women, culture, earth No Comments »

In an era of name-calling and sour dogma, Marianne Williamson’s work calls for reconciliation and self-empowerment. In a culture obsessed with therapies and experts, she insists that the healer is within each of us. In a time of widespread fear and confusion, she returns again and again to the power of love and forgiveness.

Her book, A Woman’s Worth, explored what it means to be in a woman in today’s society and suggested that women first have to examine their inner lives before they can successfully conquer the outer world.

It speaks to the fact that our worth as women is not defined by the society that we live in, though it longs to shape our perspective, but rather as our inate quality of being a woman. We are powerful, gentle and strong at the same time. We are mothers, warriors and pioneers… that by the very virtue of being a woman we are gifted with the honor of being co-creators in this world and that we should not take our gifts lightly, but share them with world around us, not like war-lords demanding that men bow down and worship us, but rather with grace and honor, like a queen successfully ruling her domain.
